A Haunting Comedy. Rebecca Burgess is living her life when weird, supernatural sh*t starts happening to her for no reason she can think of. Of course, the fact that she can't think of the reason is probably why it's happening. This heart-pounding, suspenseful, highly theatrical piece is a cautionary tale that considers the possibility of cosmic justice in the absence of social justice.

WHO
Seeking a diverse ensemble of actors, singers, and dancers/movers 18 and older. Roles are open to all genders, races, ethnicities, and body types. Actors with disabilities are strongly encouraged to audition. SLAC is an equal-opportunity employer.

Description of Play is linked here.

  • Bat Boy (Edgar): Late Teens - Early 20s (Vocal Range - Bb2-C#5)
Half boy-half bat. "Bat Boy" is very raw and unsophisticated at the beginning of the play (after all, he has lived in a cave his entire life and has never been exposed to civilization) and can't even speak. However, with the Parker’s help, he grows into "Edgar” - an intelligent and enthusiastic individual with a strong desire to be accepted. He struggles with his identity (man vs. beast) and the prejudice and hatred of the town. The actor will have to be able to portray both sides of his personality and be able to tap into the confusion and anger that often boils up, all the while maintaining the innocent and loving essence of the character. Seeking a great physical actor, who can command the stage and convey heartbreaking truth for a tour de force role that bridges many vocal and performance styles from English Music Hall to Rock opera.
  • Dr. Thomas Parker: 30's - 50's (Vocal Range - Bb2-A4)
The town veterinarian…  a desperate man in a loveless marriage (due to the troubled past of the couple). As he sees the attachment growing between Bat Boy and Meredith, Dr. Parker grows to secretly despise the boy. Driven mad by this hatred and jealousy, he manipulates the situation using his veterinarian skills to his advantage even at the price of human life. Seeking a strong singer and actor to believably portray his decline into diabolical madness.

  • Meredith Parker:: 30's - 50's (Vocal Range - F3-F5)
Dr. Parker's wife, Shelley's mother. Meredith armors herself as the perfect housewife. But as a deeply kept secret is disturbed, her world starts to crumble around her. She is a wonderfully complex character with great songs. There must be a strong connection between Meredith and Edgar.

  • Shelley Parker: Late Teens -  Early 20's (Vocal Range - G#3-F5)
The Parker's rebellious daughter. Shelley transforms from a spoiled brat into a young woman who falls in love with Edgar and protects him from the town's wrath. The actor playing this role must have spunk, good comic timing, a strong voice.

  • Sheriff Reynolds: 30-60 (Vocal Range - C#3-E4)
The Sheriff brings Bat Boy to Dr. Parker's house to be "taken care of". He is called upon by the town folks to deal with the situation whenever the situation goes awry. He is always the mediator and tries to do the right thing… has a deep yet unspoken connection to Meredith.
  • Also seeking 5 Ensemble members (all with strong acting, singing, and movement ability) to play multiple characters in rapid-fire succession.:

  • Rick Taylor: Late Teens -Early 20's (Vocal Range - E3-B4)
A bully and Shelley's boyfriend. Raps.

  • Ron Taylor: Teenager
    Brother of Rick and Ruthie

  • Ruthie Taylor: Teenager
Sister of Rick and Ron, hospitalized from Bat-bite.

  • Mrs. Taylor: 40's - 50's (Vocal Range - E4-F5)
Mother to three teens: Rick, Ron, and Ruthie.  She unapologetically seeks vengeance and protection for her “babies!”

  • Reverend Billy Hightower: (Vocal Range - Eb3-Bb4)
A larger-than-life Revival Preacher with good comedic timing and must be a strong singer who is able to riff and sing in the gospel style.

  • Pan: (Vocal Range - Eb3-A4)
A forest god who sings "Children, Children" and presides over an interpretive marriage ceremony for Shelley and Bat Boy. Must be a strong singer. Commanding, Otherworldly, Sexual, Powerful.

  • ... and additional roles such as: Clem (a townsman), Ned (a rancher), Bud (a rancher), Daisy (a school teacher), Maggie (Town Representative), Lorraine (a rancher’s wife), lusty forest animals, inner demons, Doctor, Mr. Dillon (a rancher), Roy, Institute Man, etc…
